French Baroque

The French period of Interior Design and Architecture was divided into many periods, on important one being the baroque period. This period was made mainly by the "Louis'" including Louis XIV. A well known sort of emblem that was prominent with Louis was the letter L, it was double looped and elaborate. This was something that was used on many things that distinguished something from this time period. Some of the important people, saught after people as a matter of fact, included Louis Le Vau who was an architect , Andre Le Notre who was a garden designer, Charles LeBrun who painted  interiors and decorated, and  Puget who was a sculptor. With this mix of people the King could get every job done for the building of his structures. This group worked together many times and made some of the most envied buildings of the time.
One of the most important buildings of the time period was the Palais de Versailles, the Hall of Mirrors. The windows open into a mirror. The hall was 240 feet long, 34 wide, and 43 high. It included the Barrell vault, and Le Brun's largest allegorical painting. Here there was tons of furniture, chandeliers, sconces, planters that were all solid silver. Because of this being so expensive the regular people were upset by how much they were being charged in taxes to support the building that they did not benefit from much,so they ended up burning down part of the building.

Each of these periods has its own unique style which makes French time full of variety.

Usually the most influential things about each subdivision is the people. For example in the Rococo style Louis XV is the person that makes most of the decisions about the style. In this style this eliminates classical orders , smaller curves. and oriental influence. The Neoclassical style was made by Louis XVI which incorporated the revival of classical architectural orders, straight lines, and Adam influence.

Italian Renaissance

The Italian Renaissance Period was between 1400-1600. The Furniture of this period was very interesting. First was a chair which was known as the Sedia. This was an armchair that had straight legs stuck to the floor stretchers. To support the front of the arms of the chairs there were turned baluster or vase like forms. One of the very common things used in this time period for furniture was the nailheads on the wood and fringe. Also on these chairs in particular they tended to have a black seat made of velvet or even a tapestry or ornamented leather. This was where they used most of the decorative aspects in their design. This chair is shown below (image 1). Another piece of furniture well known in this period was the sgabello, This was a stool with a back, it was usually an octagonal or rectangular seat and had 3 legs. This was used for pretty much anything, all purposes , but especially dining. The chairs were a huge part of this time period because also popular was the x chair, which was also known as the Dante chair. This chair was two x's separated by a leather seat in the middle. Down the sides were fringe and tasseled cushions. Other examples of furniture known to this period were: the Savonarola chair, the Cassone (chest), the Cassapanca, beds, Trestle type tables and the Florentine table.

Spanish Period

The Spanish Period included many monuments and important structures. The most important one of the times had to have been the Alhambra. This was the last Spanish palace to be completed before the Moors came out of power. The Alhambra is considered to be the highest achievement of architecture of the time. The exterior of the building was pretty plain but the landscaping was more elaborate, including courtyards, gardens, fountains, and pools. The building is shown below.

Other of the structures that are relevant to this time period are the La Mota Castle, and the Catherdral of Seville. La Mota was built in the 15th century. There were more castles built in Spain than any other European countries. This castle in particular was made of concrete with bricks around it. As for the Cathedral it was located in Seville, which was in Andalusia Spain. This building is the largest Cathedral in the world at this point in town. Cathedrals tend to show wealth, and inside there were 80 chapels and there were usually 500 masses a day. (Cathedral of Seville is shown below)
