Rome Reviews

Katie - I like that Katie talked about the Colosseum and the Parthenon and their importance plus lots of facts.

Kiera - I love how Kiera separated her paragraphs, each one she goes super in depth but not to the point where it is boring.

Greek Reviews

Haley- I like that you mentioned that the building was made for Athena, I think it is good to know the culture behind the buildings.

Holli- I like that Holli separated her pictures from past to current. Having current applications make it easier to relate to and fun to read.

Rome

During the Roman times there were many developments in the architectural field. Arches (shown in the picture below)  had a huge development and was used throughout a good portion of the designs in this time period. Also developed was the barrel vault which can be described as a bunch of arches put together to make the roof of a building. It gets its name from its resemblance of a barrel. The final important development we are learning about was the dome which was used in so many ways in the world. The domes are just large half spheres stuck to the top of buildings to create a roof.

Pompeii is one of the biggest reasons we know as much as we do about this culture. When Mount Vesuvius erupted the entire town was buried in ash, luckily enough preserving all of the now priceless artifact that became the basis of what we know happened here. This is why we know so much about the building and furniture, because they were preserved perfectly in meters of ash.

Classical Civilization-Greece

One of the most important parts of the Ancient Greek Civilization is their pillars. These include the Ionic, doric and the corithian. Each pillar has a sort of different meaning and a different way it is designed. The Doric (Shown in the first picture on the left) is the most simple and is sometimes referred to as the "optical perfection" due to its simplicity and focus on accuracy. The Ionic (shown center) is a little more advanced showing what look like scrolls on the top of the pillar. As for the most advanced looking, it is the Corinthian. This incorporates the scrolls of the Ionic and add a more complex leafy pattern, which was used for highly decorative situations,

When looking at the homes of the Greece Civilization the furniture is a very important aspect. There are tons of new furniture introduced in this civilization. For one the 'thronos' which is a formal chair of honor, something that we would consider as a throne, is created and used. They also began using a 'klismos' which is a very graceful and influential furniture piece. (shown below) This chair had curved saber legs, and an arched back for more comfort. Another piece, extremely similar to the Klismos is the Diophros ,which is pretty much the same desing just it lacks a back so it sort of more resembles a stool in that way.The final piece was the 'Kline' which was used for a lot of purposes including: a bed, an eating area, lounge chair, etc. The multipurpose use of this piece was very popular.

Ancient Civilization

One of the most important things about this section is the differences of the homes based on the your status in the community. For example for the higher up individuals in the society get something along the lines of a 'Country Villa', this can include anything along the lines of: A courtyard, porch, vestibule, reception, loggia, bedrooms, bathrooms, closets, and much more.
A loggia is defined as "a room, hall, gallery, or porch open to the air on at least one side" (Shown Below). These can be used to just hang out and there is not any air conditioning so it is a great way to catch the little breeze that may be there. This is a big issue due to the Egyptian climate lacking rainfall, having intense sunlight, and the little variation in temperature.

An important aspect of the Egyptian civilization that helps us know what we know about the culture. The richer one was, the more elaborately they were buried, particularly preserved in tomb. This is because their religion is heavy on the life after death so they put anything of value in the tomb to go to the afterlife with them. This is how we found many things about the way they lived, because there were many piece of furniture recovered from the tombs.

Reviews

Erin: I like that Erin picked stonehenge because I really enjoyed learning more. She added different ways on how it was thought to be made and used post and lentel as an example.

Erin K: Erin talks about how homes are a means of survival which I feel is very important part of the prehistoric design period.

Prehistoric

The Prehistoric period is quite interesting due to the means of their design. This includes how they do not use very much furniture and how they used a lot of natural resources to design and build because that was all they had. Slowly they would progress to having beds and shelves but at the beginning they stuck to just a shelter because they only needed that to survive.

Another interesting thing is the houses for the nomadic people. They still today stick to the needs only basis. Most of the things that were made were only things that they could use, because otherwise there was no point in carrying the items with them from place to place. The way they chose their places of residence was purely by location. They went to where they could survive, and when they created their homes it reflected just that, a temporary home to keep them safe, not even a home.

The one cool thing that they did get to do in an aspect of design was on religious things and their few pieces of decor. This could include baskets, rugs, and their clothing was extremely colorful and patterned compared to their homes. They only used patterns, colors and designs on things that had meaning such as: the tribe, their gods, and society and they were strictly ornamental.
